Making the phone calmer

Unplugg replaces my Android home screen with limits, a pause before launching apps, and a grey screen.

Most of my phone time was not decisions. It was reflex: unlock, tap, scroll, put it down, repeat.

Unplugg is a launcher, the app that is your home screen. That is a good place to intervene, because every app launch passes through it. Mine does three small things.

  • A pause. Launching an app waits a moment first. Often that is enough to change my mind.
  • Session limits. A cap on how long an app can be used, enforced from the launcher.
  • Monochrome. The screen goes grey. Colour is what makes feeds feel like candy.

It is built in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose for one phone, and installed by hand, not through a store. That is a feature: no accounts, no ads, no growth plan. It only has to work for me.
